These spheres are all polished by hand at a world class lapidary in Madagascar without the use of stone sealers or resins. Given this more minimalistic polishing process, some areas may have a more rough look and feel where the artist decided to leave some of the natural features intact. The lapidaries and artists that we work with are incredibly talented and many of them have been doing it for generations as a family business. While they can’t compete with some of the mass produced items coming out of factories, they do have a surprising amount of accuracy and consistency when it comes to polishing products. A factory may be able to produce a thousand crystal spheres exactly 60 millimeters in size a day with almost no variation while an expert lapidary artist may be able to do ten to twenty pieces a day all within a few millimeters of each other. While it isn’t possible to get highly consistent items when crafted by hand, a real artist understands how to properly polish an item to bring out the best features. It’s like comparing an original painting to reproduction prints.
