This variety of watermelon tourmaline is from a new deposit in Minas Gerais that is producing some very unusual material. Hosted in primarily a glittery mica filled feldspar matrix often mixed in with lithium rich lepidolite, these crystals have a very intense coloration and high level of clarity. This isn’t the typical watermelon tourmaline we usually encounter with the classic red to green color. The red coloration is more similar to a magenta purple and transitions to a greenish-blue that is often reminiscent of aquamarine. Most pieces show excellent bicolor characteristics with a dramatic change between the colors, although a few take on a more solid color pattern. While not quite gem grade, it is still exceptional quality and many pieces could yield excellent portions of cutting material if one desires to use them for lapidary work. Right now we are only able to offer these in limited quantities until further explorations of the current deposit is made. Some of the highest quality watermelon tourmaline crystals in the world comes from this region and is highly sought after by serious collectors.
