Yes, and we go far beyond what most people mean by that. While "ethically sourced" has become a buzzword, we treat it as a responsibility. Our crystals are sourced directly through long-term partnerships with artisanal miners, family workshops, and worker-owned cooperatives. We verify licenses, support environmental stewardship, and ensure fair labor. When we can't verify a source, we simply don't buy from it.

We openly share our sourcing philosophy, vetting criteria, and the challenges of doing things right in a complex industry. We publish sourcing guides, tell honest origin stories, and hold ourselves to high internal standards that go far beyond the industry norm. We also walk away from bestsellers if they no longer meet our values.

To protect the safety and privacy of our partners. Many of the miners and artisans we work with live in vulnerable regions where disclosing details could lead to exploitation, theft, or coercion. Out of respect and safety, we choose discretion over disclosure. This is a decision rooted in ethics, not secrecy.

Not always, and here’s why that matters: no one in the industry can reliably do this for every product, despite what some may claim. You’ve likely seen businesses say they "travel the world and handpick every stone," but that’s largely a marketing fantasy. Visiting every mine for every type of crystal simply isn’t feasible, especially given the thousands of varieties, remote locations, language barriers, unstable conditions, and privacy concerns involved.

When people talk about "hand selecting," they’re often shopping through wholesalers or trade shows and picking from curated lots, not standing in active mines. This method also creates ethical and environmental issues: selecting only top-grade material contributes to major waste, as lower grades are discarded or undervalued at origin. And while trade shows can be useful, they typically involve long, opaque supply chains with little traceability.

Our approach is different. We prioritize transparency and traceability by working directly with trusted, long-term partners, including many small cooperatives. This model allows us to get as close to the source as ethically and logistically possible, while supporting fair pay, safe conditions, and community investment. Most of our crystals come from producers we know by name and have collaborated with for years. We don’t pretend it’s perfect, but it’s always evolving toward better.

Most certifications aren't designed for small-scale mines or the crystal trade. While we don't offer formal labels like Fairtrade (which many producers can’t afford), we follow equivalent or higher standards and publish them transparently. Rather than pay to participate in broken systems, we invest directly into a better sourcing model. Ironically, many of the large corporate mines and wholesalers that could afford third-party audits choose not to pursue them—likely because they would not pass. In an industry where profits often come before ethics, we’ve chosen a different path: long-term partnerships, clear standards, and radical transparency.

This is one of the most overlooked and often most misleading aspects of the entire crystal industry. After mining, most crystals are far from ready for market. They’re rough, dusty, and often coated with mineral deposits that must be removed. In many cases, that means being soaked in harsh acids, bleaches, or polished with petroleum-based oils and synthetic resins, some of which are toxic and unsafe to handle. Many stones are also heat-treated or irradiated to enhance their color and marketability, with no disclosure to the buyer.

We’ve chosen a different path. At Beyond Bohemian, we handle most of our crystal cleaning and processing in-house, using only non-toxic, eco-conscious methods. No acids. No petroleum products. No synthetic coatings. Instead, we use biodegradable, skin-safe solutions and detailed hand-cleaning practices to honor each stone’s natural energy and integrity. Our goal is to preserve the raw essence of the crystal, not disguise it. This commitment is part of our promise to deliver pieces that are not only visually beautiful, but also energetically clean, safe, and aligned with our values.

If a mine closes (which is not uncommon with small-scale producers), changes ownership, begins cutting corners, or stops meeting our sourcing criteria, we end the relationship—no matter how popular the item.
