Ocean jasper gets its name from the cool water spray and sea foam like colors that ripple across the surface of the stone, often showing some level of translucency. Old school material mined decades ago was frequently referred to as orbicular jasper because of the "orbs" or circular patterns scattered across the stone surface with a beautiful mix of colors. The quality was consistently outstanding with each stone appearing like an intricate piece of artwork. Northern Madagascar is the only region in the world containing significant deposits of these stones. Unfortunately high quality material is now exceptionally rare as the distinguishing "orbs" are mostly absent in most of the new stones being excavated.
