The reality is simple and rarely explained: the crystal industry has no governing body, no universal standards, and no third-party certification for ethical sourcing. Anyone can use the word “ethical,” even without proof.

That’s why we created the Beyond Ethical™ standards. We choose transparency over labels, working with trusted small-scale producers and conducting careful research into the origins and impacts of every material we choose to carry.

Sustainability at Beyond Bohemian

Sustainability isn’t just a principle to us. It’s a responsibility.
In an industry that often relies on excess, vague claims, and unnecessary waste, we try to make more thoughtful choices at every step, from sourcing and packaging to reuse and environmental support.
We don’t believe sustainability is something you declare once. We believe it’s something you keep working toward.
What Happens After the Mine Matters

Some of the biggest environmental impacts in this industry don't happen at the mine. They happen during processing.
Most crystals arrive buried in dirt and clay. In the conventional supply chain, they're often cleaned with industrial acids and solvents, polished with petroleum-based mineral oils, sometimes even coated or stabilized with resins. The result may look beautiful, but it leaves invisible residues and an environmental footprint few brands ever talk about.
We do it differently. Every raw crystal is cleaned in-house using natural, skin-safe ingredients, a safer and more patient process that achieves the same results without harsh chemicals. We finish with jojoba oil, a plant-based, biodegradable oil that enhances each crystal's natural beauty without toxic residues.
It costs more, takes longer, and demands a higher standard of care. But it means your crystals are clean, safe, and exactly as nature intended.
Reducing waste through innovation

Less than 50% of the material we receive meets the visual and structural standards required for our store.
But minerals that formed over millions of years deserve more than being discarded because they aren’t “perfect.”
Instead of rejecting the rest, we take responsibility for it.
Small fragments, irregular pieces, and lower-grade material are redirected to artisans, educators, landscapers, and agricultural soil enrichment projects. Even tiny chips are collected and reused whenever possible.
Because sustainability doesn’t start with what you sell.

It starts with what you refuse to waste.
What Happens to the Material Nobody Wants?

Many crystal businesses claim they travel the world to “hand-select crystals at the source.” While idealistic and sounds great from a marketing standpoint, this is not only highly misleading but nearly impossible in practice.
In reality, much of the industry operates through wholesalers, brokers, and gem shows. By the time crystals reach those channels, large portions of the original material have already been rejected or abandoned.
We choose a different approach.
Whenever possible, we purchase the entire collection, not just the visually perfect pieces. This allows us to make sure the remaining material is redirected to people who can actually use it rather than letting it become waste.
Giving Existing Collections a Thoughtful Next Home

Not every crystal needs to be newly mined to have value.
We actively purchase and curate existing mineral collections, helping keep beautiful material in circulation.
This reduces the demand for new extraction while giving collectors, educators, and makers access to crystals that already exist.
The most ethical crystal is the one that has already been discovered.

We prioritize low-impact materials that keep your order safe while reducing unnecessary waste. Every component is carefully chosen so it can either return to the earth or stay in circulation instead of becoming trash.

All bulk crystals are packaged in 100% plant-based compostable cotton bags, never single-use plastic.
Recycled & Reused Shipping Materials
Our shipping boxes are made from post-consumer recycled cardboard or thoughtfully repurposed boxes given a second life.
