Before You Buy Tourmaline
Black, pink or green?
Tourmaline is a family of related minerals. Black tourmaline is schorl, the most common kind. Most pink, green, blue and watermelon tourmaline is elbaite, and one crystal can hold two or more colors.
Natural or treated?
Black tourmaline is almost never treated. Some colored gem tourmaline is heated to lighten a dark tone, and some is irradiated to brighten a pale color. We disclose all treatments on the product page.
Does the color change with the angle?
Tourmaline can show different shades from different angles. Color is usually darkest when you look down the length of a crystal and lightest from the side, so turn a piece slowly to see its range.
Care
At 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale it's fine for everyday wear. Clean it with warm, soapy water and a soft brush. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners, and keep it away from high heat.
