These are AA-grade Black Tourmaline tumbled stones from Minas Gerais, Brazil, sold by the piece or by the pound. Black Tourmaline, or schorl, is an iron-rich borosilicate that keeps its natural vertical striations even after tumbling. Each piece runs 0.75-1.25 inches at Mohs 7-7.5, fully natural and untreated. A favorite protection stone for entryways.
Black tourmaline is dense, heavy for its size, and so dark it reads almost architectural. Run your fingernail along a good piece and you'll feel the vertical striations that tell you the crystal grew straight up out of the rock. Tourmaline derives from the Sinhalese word 'turmali.' Black tourmaline has been used as a protective talisman for centuries.

Grade AA. Solid dark color, clean tumble polish, visible natural striations on the surface. Grades reflect visual quality within a batch. A is standard, with typical inclusions. AA shows stronger color, cleaner surfaces and tighter sizing. AAA is the top 10 to 15 percent of a batch.
