Emerald is green beryl colored by traces of chromium or vanadium, and nearly all of it carries natural inclusions. It's sold as raw crystals and as cut stones, and most cut emeralds are filled with oil or resin to hide fractures.

Before You Buy Emerald

Is it oiled or treated?

Oiling is the trade's usual emerald treatment: most cut emeralds have oil, wax or resin worked into their fractures to make them less visible. We disclose all treatments on the product page.

Why is it cloudy?

Most emerald holds many inclusions and fine fractures, called its jardin, or garden. They often make raw crystals look cloudy rather than glassy, and an emerald with no visible inclusions is rare.

Emerald or green beryl?

Both are beryl. Emerald is the rich, distinctly green kind, colored by chromium or vanadium; light or weakly colored stones are called green beryl. The trade debates where the line falls.

Care

At 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale it resists scratches, but its fractures make it easy to chip. Wash it gently in warm water with mild soap; skip steam and ultrasonic cleaners, which can strip oil from fractures.
