Shungite is a black, carbon-rich rock about two billion years old, mined near Lake Onega in Russian Karelia. It's sold as tumbled stones, raw pieces and polished shapes, and pieces sold as shungite can vary widely in carbon content.

Before You Buy Shungite

Is it real shungite?

In scientific use, shungite is near-pure carbon, found mostly in thin veins in Karelia, Russia. The dark rock it's spread through is sold as shungite too: natural, but with less carbon, and amounts vary widely.

Shiny or matte?

The near-pure carbon is shiny; the more common rock is matte gray-black. Polished, it turns deep black and can show thin white veins or brassy threads of pyrite.

Does it really contain fullerenes?

Yes, but only in trace amounts, about 1 to 10 parts per million, and shungite isn't unusually rich in them compared with other carbon-rich rocks.

Care

At 3.5 to 4 on the Mohs scale it scratches easily, so store it apart from harder stones. A rinse is fine, but keep it out of drinking water; lab tests found lead and cadmium leaching from it.
