Shungite is a soft, carbon-rich rock formed in the Karelia region of northwestern Russia. The carbon makes it look matte black to charcoal grey, and the surface buffs to a satin polish rather than a glassy one.

Where does this shungite come from?

Our shungite is mined in Karelia, Russia, near Lake Onega. That's the only meaningful commercial deposit in the world, so any genuine shungite traces back to this region.

Polished shungite isn't heated, dyed, or color-treated. It's cut from rough and tumbled or buffed to a soft sheen. The color comes from the natural carbon content.

How do I care for these blocks?

Wipe with a soft, dry cloth. Shungite is soft for a stone (around 3.5 to 4 on the Mohs scale) so avoid hard knocks. It can leave a faint grey residue when new, which is normal and settles after a few wipes.

What is shungite traditionally associated with?

Shungite is often kept near electronics or in workspaces by people interested in grounding, EMF practices, or general energetic clearing. We share traditional associations without claiming any health effect.

What does a crystal grade (A, AA, or AAA) actually mean?

Crystal grades reflect visual quality within a single batch. Grade A is standard quality with typical inclusions. Grade AA shows stronger color saturation, cleaner surface, and tighter sizing. Grade AAA represents the top 10 to 15 percent of any batch: exceptional clarity, consistent color, and minimal surface variation.
