Blue lace agate is chalcedony with fine, wavy bands of pale blue and white, best known from the Ysterputs mine in Namibia, which stopped production in 2017. It's sold raw, tumbled, as palm stones and as slabs and cabochons.

Before You Buy Blue Lace Agate

Natural or dyed?

Usually natural. Its pale blue is thought to come from light scattering inside the stone, not a pigment. Bright, neon blue agate is rarely natural. We disclose all treatments on the product page.

How blue is it?

Expect pale or light blue in wavy, lace-like bands, with thin white layers between them. The balance of blue and white, and how fine the lace is, differs from piece to piece.

Is it still mined?

The classic source, Namibia's Ysterputs mine, stopped production in January 2017 after more than 50 years. Blue lace agate is also found in Malawi and Kenya.

Care

Like all agate it's tough, at 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, and handles everyday carry. Rinse it in warm, soapy water, dry it with a soft cloth, and keep it apart from softer stones.
