Labradorite is a plagioclase feldspar named for Labrador, Canada, where it was first described. Its flashes of blue, green and gold come from light bouncing off thin layers inside the crystal, and it's sold raw, tumbled and polished into palm stones, spheres and slabs.

Before You Buy Labradorite
Does it flash from every angle?
No. The flash, called labradorescence, is light reflecting off tiny layers inside the stone, so it shows only at certain angles. At other angles it can look plain gray. Tilt it slowly under a bright light.
What colors will I see?
Blue and green are most common, often with gold. Orange, pink and purple are rarer. Labradorite that flashes the full range of colors is often sold as spectrolite, a name first given to Finnish material.
Is it the same as moonstone?
Related, but not the same. Both are feldspars. Moonstone's soft white glow seems to float just below the surface; most labradorite flashes strong color over a gray to black body. Rainbow moonstone is actually a white labradorite.
Care
At 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale it's softer than quartz and can chip or split if dropped. A quick rinse is fine; dry it and store it apart from harder stones.
