Onyx is chalcedony with straight, parallel bands, classically black and white. Most solid black onyx is dyed or sugar-and-acid treated chalcedony, an old practice. It's sold tumbled, as beads and palm stones, and carved.

Before You Buy Onyx
Natural or dyed?
Most black onyx on the market is pale chalcedony or agate darkened with dye or a sugar-and-acid treatment, a practice dating to ancient times. We disclose all treatments on the product page.
Is onyx always black?
No. Classic onyx is chalcedony with straight, parallel bands, most often black and white; red-brown bands make it sardonyx. Undyed black onyx runs from black to charcoal gray, often with soft banding.
Is it the same as Mexican onyx?
No. Mexican onyx, also sold as onyx marble, is banded calcite, a different mineral at 3 on the Mohs scale that scratches easily and reacts with acid. True onyx is chalcedony, at 6.5 to 7.
Care
Onyx is tough enough for daily handling at 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale. Warm water, a little mild soap, and a soft brush are all it needs; dry it after. Store it apart from other stones.
