Garnet is a group of related silicate minerals that share one crystal structure, from deep red almandine and pyrope to orange spessartine and green grossular. It often forms rounded, many-faced crystals in metamorphic rock and is sold raw, tumbled and as chips.

Before You Buy Garnet
Is all garnet red?
No. Garnet is a family of related minerals found in almost every color. Red is most common, but spessartine is orange, grossular can be green or yellow, and blue garnet is extremely rare.
Why does it look almost black?
Almandine, the most common garnet, is usually dark, so thick raw pieces can look brownish red to nearly black. Hold one to a bright light and the thin edges often show deep red.
Is garnet January's birthstone?
Yes. Garnet is the birthstone for January, and any garnet counts, whatever its color. Deep red is the shade most people picture.
Care
At 6.5 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale it's about as hard as quartz. Warm, soapy water and a soft brush are always safe. Skip steam cleaners, and skip ultrasonic cleaners for stones with cracks.
