Most black onyx on the market is gray chalcedony dyed solid black. Natural onyx runs from black to charcoal gray, often with soft banding or flecks of white or orange. We disclose all treatments on the product page.

Before You Buy Black Onyx
Is black onyx dyed?
Usually, yes. Most black onyx sold is gray chalcedony dyed or treated with sugar and acid to turn it an even black, a practice dating to ancient times. We disclose all treatments on the product page.
Will it be solid black?
Not always. Natural, undyed black onyx is seldom an even jet black. Expect black to charcoal gray, often with soft banding or flecks of white or orange.
Onyx or obsidian?
They can look alike when polished. Obsidian is volcanic glass, softer at about 5.5 on the Mohs scale and easier to scratch. Black onyx is chalcedony, a fine-grained quartz at 6.5 to 7.
Care
Chalcedony needs no special care, and at 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale it handles daily carry well. Wash it with mild soap, warm water, and a soft brush, then dry it.
