Common questions
How do you choose the picks?
By hand, one piece at a time. We go through the shelves and pull out the stones with unusual character, deeper color than typical, a striking pattern, an odd form, or clarity beyond what the grade suggests. Sales numbers play no part in it.
How many pieces are in Our Picks?
Around twenty at any given time. Keeping it small is the point, since a short list is one you can actually look at piece by piece rather than scroll past.
How often do Our Picks change?
Roughly monthly, and continuously in between. Sold pieces leave the list as soon as they go, and new material joins whenever a shipment includes something that deserves the space.
What happens when a pick sells out?
It leaves the page and doesn't come back, since each pick is a specific piece. The stone's main collection is the place to look next, and the new arrivals page is where a comparable piece would first appear.
Are the picks more expensive than other pieces?
Not as a rule. A pick is chosen for character rather than price, so the list runs from small tumbled stones to large specimen pieces. Some of our favorite picks have been the modest ones that simply turned out better than their grade.
Is your labradorite natural?
Yes. The blue flash, called labradorescence, comes from light scattering between fine layers inside the feldspar itself, so it can't be added to a stone that lacks it. The tell is that the flash appears and vanishes as you turn the piece. A stone that glows the same from every angle isn't behaving like labradorite.
