Why spheres are special

A sphere is the only shape that shows a stone from every angle at once and hides nothing. There's no back, no base, no flattering side. Banding, orbs, veils and flaws all sit on the surface in plain view, which is why lapidaries treat it as the most demanding shape to cut well. A stone has to be good all the way through to survive becoming a sphere, and the ones that do carry a kind of quiet proof of it.

How crystal spheres are made

The process is subtractive from the first cut to the last polish. A block of rough is sawn into a cube, the corners are trimmed away, and the rounded blank is ground between rotating pipes until it turns freely in every direction. Polishing then runs through stage after stage of finer grit. A finished sphere can be a fraction of the rough it began as, and that lost material, along with the hours on the wheel, is why spheres cost more per gram than tumbled stones of the same material.

Choosing a sphere

Start with what the shape will put on display. Ocean jasper from Madagascar is the natural sphere stone, since its orbs wrap the full surface with no bad angle to hide. Our emerald spheres from Zimbabwe keep the green crystal locked in its gray host rock, so one sphere reads as two materials. Black jade from Peru is the opposite kind of choice, about weight in the hand and depth of polish rather than pattern. Then think about size. A piece that fits a closed hand suits holding and handling, while larger spheres belong on a shelf. Caring for a sphere

The shape's one weakness is that it rolls. Keep a sphere on a stand or in a shallow dish rather than loose on a shelf, and be thoughtful near hard floors, since a drop lands all that weight on a single point of the curve. Softer material asks for a little more. Shungite sits at 3.5 to 4 on the Mohs scale and will pick up scratches from harder neighbors, and pink opal appreciates the same gentle handling. Strong daily sun can slowly dull the color of some stones, so a spot out of direct light is the safer default for any of them.
