Kyanite is an aluminum silicate that grows as flat blue blades in high-pressure metamorphic rock, and it is unusual for having two hardnesses, softer along a blade than across it. It's sold raw as blades and clusters, and tumbled.

Before You Buy Blue Kyanite
Is the blue even?
Not usually. Kyanite's blue is typically patchy, often with a deeper streak down the center of a blade, and shades run from pale to deep blue. Uneven color is normal, not a flaw.
Why two hardness numbers?
Kyanite is softer along a blade, about 4.5 to 5 on the Mohs scale, than across it, at 6.5 to 7. So steel can scratch a blade lengthwise but not crosswise.
Will the blades break?
They can. Kyanite splits easily along its length and breaks into splinters, so thin blades may snap or shed slivers if bent or dropped. Hold raw pieces from underneath and store them padded.
Care
Clean it with a soft brush, mild soap and warm water, then dry it. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners, and store it apart from harder stones, which can scratch it along the blade.
