These are regular-grade (Type III) Shungite polished cubes from the Republic of Karelia, Russia. Karelia has produced shungite since the late 1700s; each cube is cut from that rough and hand-finished with softened corners. Each cube runs about 3.25 inches per side at Mohs 2, fully natural and untreated. A favorite grounding stone for desks.

About This Shungite

Shungite is matte black, carbon-rich, and heavier than it looks. Russian in origin, it's been used as a water filter and a talisman for centuries. Elite shungite has a silvery sheen, regular shungite is more matte.

Our polished crystals & decor are sourced from Republic of Karélia, Russia.

At 2 on the Mohs scale, it's on the softer end. Keep it away from water and store it separately from harder pieces.

Where does it come from, and how do you know?

Karelia, Russia. That's the only commercial deposit. Anything labeled shungite from a different country is usually a similar-looking carbon stone, not true shungite. It came to us through a direct source, one of the sourcing models we publish and stand behind.
