These are AA-grade Black Tourmaline tumbled stones from Minas Gerais, Brazil, sold by the piece or by the pound. Black tourmaline, or schorl, is an iron-rich borosilicate that grows in striated prismatic crystals. Each piece runs 1-1.50 inches at Mohs 7-7.5, fully natural and untreated. A favorite protection stone for entryways and desks.
Black tourmaline is dense, heavy for its size, and so dark it reads almost architectural. Run your fingernail along a good piece and you'll feel the vertical striations that tell you the crystal grew straight up out of the rock.

Black Tourmaline's natural striations are a characteristic feature, not a flaw, and are visible in well-graded pieces. Grades reflect visual quality within a batch. A is standard, with typical inclusions. AA shows stronger color, cleaner surfaces and tighter sizing. AAA is the top 10 to 15 percent of a batch. Every lot is inspected and graded by our team in Rockville, Maryland, not taken on the supplier’s word.
