About This Black Tourmaline

Black tourmaline is dense, heavy for its size, and so dark it reads almost architectural. Run your fingernail along a good piece and you'll feel the vertical striations that tell you the crystal grew straight up out of the rock. This piece runs 1.25 to 1.75 inches, roughly 40 to 60 grams, our biggest and most striking Madagascar pieces.

Sourced from Vakinankaratra, Madagascar.

Tourmaline derives from the Sinhalese word 'turmali.' Black tourmaline has been used as a protective talisman for centuries.

Traditionally Used For

Black tourmaline is traditionally a stone for a sense of groundedness when things feel uncertain, staying connected to your body and the moment, and cleansing. It's traditionally linked to the root chakra. If that resonates, hold one in your non-dominant hand for a few breaths when things feel shaky. Let it become part of your own quiet routine.

These are traditional associations drawn from historical practice. This stone is not a substitute for medical or mental health care.

Care and Use

Sensitivity Low

Black Tourmaline sits at 7-7.5 on the Mohs scale, harder than a steel blade, so it handles daily carry and a quick rinse without fuss. Keep chemical cleaners away from it; they can etch the surface.
