Lab-grown quartz tends to be remarkably clean, sometimes with a faint flat plane near the middle where the seed crystal sat. Perfect, water-clear clarity across a large piece is the most common signal worth a second look.
Color zoning
Color is a strong clue with amethyst and similar stones. Natural amethyst usually shows angular or patchy zoning, with color concentrated in certain areas. Lab-grown material often looks almost too even, with deep, consistent saturation from end to end.
Price and availability
Economics tell their own story. A large, glassy, deeply colored point at a price that undercuts everything else on the shelf is worth questioning. That does not always mean synthetic, but it is a reason to ask the seller a direct question about origin.
Where treated stones fit in
There is a middle category worth knowing. Some natural stones are heat-treated to change their color. A large share of "citrine" on the market, for example, is amethyst that has been heated until it turns golden. The material is natural, but the color is not. Treatment is common and accepted across the industry. What counts is whether it is disclosed, so you know what you are bringing home.
