Black obsidian is volcanic glass. Sharp, glossy, formed when lava cooled too fast to crystallize. It's one of the oldest materials humans have used for tools, and it still feels ancient when you hold a piece. Named after Obsius, a Roman who reportedly first found it in Ethiopia.
