Hyalite Opal

Hyalite Opal

Glass with a quiet glow under the right light.

Opal (hydrated silica, SiO2 nH2O)Mexico, Hungary, NamibiaTreatment: None (natural fluorescence)

Hyalite opal is a colorless to pale variety of opal that forms as glassy, water-clear botryoidal crusts on host rock. Unlike common opal, it shows a vivid green fluorescence under ultraviolet light, caused by trace uranium incorporated during formation. The fluorescence is internal and natural, requiring no treatment. Many people work with it for clarity of mind, lightness, and the quiet thrill of finding light hidden inside a stone.
