Ocean Jasper is orbicular silicified rhyolite, technically a chalcedony, whose orbs formed as silica deposited around nuclei. The piece measures 4.30 by 2.51 by 5.72 inches, weighs 1,294 grams, and sits at Mohs 6.5-7. Genuine Ocean Jasper is found only in Madagascar, and this is the piece pictured. A favorite joy stone for living rooms.
Ocean Jasper is a trade name for orbicular silicified rhyolite from northern Madagascar, with a Mohs hardness around 6.5-7. The name is modern marketing, not formal geology, but it sticks because the orbs and ocean-like swirls are unmistakable. It's technically a chalcedony rather than a classic jasper, and the original coastal deposit at Marovato has been worked down significantly since its discovery in 1997.
On the market, jasper, agate, and chalcedony labels often blur together since all are microcrystalline quartz. Genuine Ocean Jasper comes only from Madagascar.
Ocean Jasper is traditionally associated with joy, emotional ease, stress relief, and love. Many people work with it as a heart-opening companion, or keep it in living spaces and meditation corners where its softer energy fits. It pairs well with quieter contemplative practice.
These are traditional associations drawn from historical practice. This stone is not a substitute for medical or mental health care.
