This is an AA-grade Amethyst geode from Artigas, Uruguay. A geode is a volcanic gas pocket lined with quartz crystals, here colored purple by trace iron and natural irradiation. The piece measures 8.94 x 4.92 x 8.43 inches at Mohs 7 and was bought directly at the source. A favorite stress relief stone for display shelves.
Amethyst has the kind of purple that draws you in without trying. Some pieces are pale lavender, others are deep violet, and the best ones catch light through the crystal structure so they seem to glow from the inside. From Greek 'a-methystos' meaning 'not drunk', ancient Greeks believed amethyst prevented intoxication and carved drinking vessels from it.
