What exactly is tiger iron?

A banded ironstone, not a single mineral. Golden tiger's eye, red jasper and metallic hematite formed together in ancient iron-rich sediments and were later folded, which is why the bands curve.

Where does it come from?

Northern Cape, South Africa material, carved in Zimbabwe through an artisan network. It reached us through an existing collection rather than new extraction.

How does it differ from the other tiger iron mushroom?

This one is shorter and broader, 6.03 inches tall with a 3.73 inch cap, and runs warmer through rust red and bronze. The taller piece is more sharply banded in dark red and grey.

Does it stand on its own?

Yes. The base is flat and it stands unaided on a level surface.

How should I care for it?

Wipe with a soft cloth. A quick rinse is safe, but dry it thoroughly, since the hematite bands can mark if left wet.

Tiger iron is not one mineral. It is a banded ironstone in which three materials sit together in folded layers: golden chatoyant tiger's eye, deep red jasper, and metallic grey hematite. The banding formed in ancient iron-rich sediments and was later folded, which is why the stripes curve rather than run straight.

The Northern Cape of South Africa is the principal world source of this material. Its Griqualand West banded iron formations produce the tiger's eye, jasper and hematite association together in the same rock, which is what makes tiger iron possible at all.

This mushroom was carved in Zimbabwe through an artisan network and reached us via an existing collection rather than new extraction.
