In Short

This is a natural agate reed oil diffuser from Minas Gerais, Brazil, cut from an agate nodule and hollowed to hold a removable plastic tube for the oil. One face is polished flat to show the banding while the outer rind stays rough, and a chrome collar seats into the top. It weighs 2 to 3 pounds and rates Mohs 6.5 to 7. Reeds are not included.

Agate is banded chalcedony, a microcrystalline quartz that fills cavities in volcanic rock in slow concentric layers. Cut through and polished, a nodule shows those layers as lace, rings, and sometimes a small open vug where the growth never closed.

These diffusers come from a cooperative in Minas Gerais, Brazil. One face is polished to open up the banding, the outer rind is left rough exactly as it came out of the ground, and the interior is hollowed for a removable plastic tube.

Worth knowing: a great deal of the agate sold today is dyed bright blue, pink, or green. These are undyed, so the greys, creams, and rusts are the colours the stone formed with.

Agate is traditionally a grounding, steadying stone, associated with stability and a settled mind rather than any dramatic shift. It is linked to the root and sacral chakras.

As a diffuser it sits somewhere you pass daily, which suits a stone people keep for steadiness. There is no single right way to use it.

These are traditional associations drawn from historical practice. This stone is not a substitute for medical or mental health care.
