This is an AAA-grade Amethyst polished geode from Artigas, Uruguay. Amethyst crystallizes inward from the wall of a volcanic gas cavity, which is why the druzy face sits inside a gray agate rind. It measures 15.22" L x 5.36" W and weighs 23.88 pounds at Mohs 7, bought directly at the source. A favorite calming stone for living rooms.
Amethyst has the kind of purple that draws you in without trying. Some pieces are pale lavender, others are deep violet, and the best ones catch light through the crystal structure so they seem to glow from the inside. From Greek 'a-methystos' meaning 'not drunk', ancient Greeks believed amethyst prevented intoxication and carved drinking vessels from it.
A geode this size began as a gas bubble in a volcanic flow. Silica-rich fluid seeped in over millions of years and the crystals grew inward from the wall, which is why the purple face sits inside a gray agate shell.
