About This Black Moonstone

Black moonstone is a dark variety of moonstone, gray-to-black with the same internal flash (called adularescence) that makes regular moonstone glow from within. The darker base color makes the flash more dramatic.

Hand-selected from Amoron'i Mania, Madagascar.

Traditionally Used For

In the tradition, black moonstone shows up most often around staying connected to your body and the moment, a sense of groundedness when things feel uncertain, and listening to the quieter signals. It's traditionally linked to the root and crown chakras. If that resonates, keep a piece in your pocket during the day for a steadying presence. Trust what feels useful and leave the rest.

These are traditional associations drawn from historical practice. This stone is not a substitute for medical or mental health care.

Care and Use

Sensitivity Moderate

Black Moonstone sits at 6-6.5 on the Mohs scale, about as hard as glass, so it handles daily use but will scratch against harder stones. Keep chemical cleaners away from it; they can etch the surface.

Questions Before You Buy

Is this real black moonstone, and is it heated, dyed or treated?

Natural black moonstone from Amoron'i Mania, Madagascar. No. The stone's color and optical sheen are entirely natural. No coating, irradiation, or treatment has been applied.

Will I get the exact pieces in the photos?

You'll receive pieces from the same batch photographed, weighed to the amount you choose. Every piece passes our quality control and meets or exceeds what you see in the photos. Single specimens are listed separately and say so.

What size are the pieces, and how many are in a pound?

Each piece measures 1.25 to 2 inches on its longest side and weighs 25 to 50 grams. About 16 to 24 pieces per pound at this size, and each option shows its piece count.

What does AA grade mean?

AA grade at large size means clearly visible, well-centered adularescence, consistent dark body color, a quality hand polish, and no significant chips or fractures. The larger surface area makes grading the sheen more stringent. Grades reflect visual quality within a batch. A is standard, with typical inclusions. AA shows stronger color, cleaner surfaces and tighter sizing. AAA is the top 10 to 15 percent of a batch. Every lot is inspected and graded by our team in Rockville, Maryland, not taken on the supplier’s word.

Where does it come from, and how do you know?

Sourced from Madagascar, the world's primary supplier of Black Moonstone with strong adularescent sheen and dark body color. It came to us through a community partnership, one of the sourcing models we publish and stand behind.
