These are AA-grade Carnelian hand polished stones from Boeny, Madagascar, sold by the piece or by the pound. Carnelian is an orange-to-red chalcedony, a microcrystalline quartz colored by iron oxide. Each piece runs 0.75-1.50 inches at Mohs 6.5-7, sourced through a community partnership. A favorite confidence stone for pockets and desks.
Carnelian runs from pale peach to deep rust red. The color comes from iron, and the best pieces have a warmth that feels almost lit from within. It's a variety of chalcedony, related to agate, and it polishes up with a glassy shine.
These tumbled stones come from Boeny, Madagascar. Worth knowing: a lot of the carnelian on the market is heat-treated. What we carry is natural and untreated.

Carnelian sits at 6.5-7 on the Mohs scale, about as hard as glass, so it handles daily use but will scratch against harder stones. Keep chemical cleaners away from it; they can etch the surface.

Grade AA. Warm orange to deep red color, good translucency, hand polished to a smooth feel. Grades reflect visual quality within a batch. A is standard, with typical inclusions. AA shows stronger color, cleaner surfaces and tighter sizing. AAA is the top 10 to 15 percent of a batch. Every lot is inspected and graded by our team in Rockville, Maryland, not taken on the supplier’s word.
