About This Carnelian

Carnelian runs from pale peach to deep rust red. The color comes from iron, and the best pieces have a warmth that feels almost lit from within. It's a variety of chalcedony, related to agate, and it polishes up with a glassy shine.

It has been one of the most popular gemstones throughout human history, used in everything from Egyptian funerary jewelry to Roman signet rings.

We bring these raw pieces in from Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Worth knowing: a lot of the carnelian on the market is heat-treated. What we carry is natural and untreated.

Traditionally Used For

Carnelian has long been used in practices around a quiet sense of renewal, settling into who you already are, and making space for new ideas. It's traditionally linked to the sacral and root chakras. If that resonates, keep one nearby when you're making something with your hands. There's no single right way to carry it.

These are traditional associations drawn from historical practice. This stone is not a substitute for medical or mental health care.

Care and Use

Sensitivity Low

Carnelian sits at 6.5-7 on the Mohs scale, about as hard as glass, so it handles daily use but will scratch against harder stones. Keep chemical cleaners away from it; they can etch the surface.

Questions Before You Buy

Is this real carnelian, and is it heated, dyed or treated?

Natural carnelian from Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Our Carnelian is personally selected and we disclose treatment status per batch. If you have questions about your specific lot, reach out to us directly.

Will I get the exact pieces in the photos?

You'll receive pieces from the same batch photographed, weighed to the amount you choose. Every piece passes our quality control and meets or exceeds what you see in the photos. Single specimens have their own product pages and say so.

What size are the pieces, and how many are in a pound?

Each piece measures 1 to 2 inches on its longest side and weighs 20 to 50 grams. About 12 to 20 pieces per pound at this size, and each option shows its piece count.

What does A grade mean?

A Grade raw stones show solid orange coloring and good natural form. Natural banding or slight color variations between pieces are part of the stone's character, not a defect. Grades reflect visual quality within a batch. A is standard, with typical inclusions. AA shows stronger color, cleaner surfaces and tighter sizing. AAA is the top 10 to 15 percent of a batch. Every lot is inspected and graded by our team in Rockville, Maryland, not taken on the supplier’s word.

Where does it come from, and how do you know?

These stones are sourced from Brazil, a major global source for Carnelian. Brazilian Carnelian tends toward rich, saturated orange-red tones. Each batch is personally selected for color and form quality. It came to us through a community partnership, one of the sourcing models we publish and stand behind.
