These are AA-grade Carnelian tumbled stones from Parana, Brazil, sold by the piece or by the pound. Carnelian is translucent at its edges when held to light, a banded chalcedony in warm orange and red. Each piece runs 1-1.50 inches at Mohs 6.5-7, sourced through a community partnership. A favorite energy stone for entryways.
Carnelian runs from pale peach to deep rust red. The color comes from iron, and the best pieces have a warmth that feels almost lit from within. It's a variety of chalcedony, related to agate, and it polishes up with a glassy shine.
It has been one of the most popular gemstones throughout human history, used in everything from Egyptian funerary jewelry to Roman signet rings.
Our tumbled stones are sourced from Paraná, Brazil. Worth knowing: a lot of the carnelian on the market is heat-treated. What we carry is natural and untreated.
Those who work with carnelian often turn to it for a quiet sense of renewal, settling into who you already are, and making space for new ideas. It's traditionally linked to the sacral and root chakras. If that resonates, keep one nearby when you're making something with your hands. How you use it is up to you.

Carnelian sits at 6.5-7 on the Mohs scale, about as hard as glass, so it handles daily use but will scratch against harder stones. Keep chemical cleaners away from it; they can etch the surface.

Grade AA. Warm orange to deep red color, good translucency, clean polish. Grades reflect visual quality within a batch. A is standard, with typical inclusions. AA shows stronger color, cleaner surfaces and tighter sizing. AAA is the top 10 to 15 percent of a batch. Every lot is inspected and graded by our team in Rockville, Maryland, not taken on the supplier’s word.
Brazil. Carnelian is also found in India, Madagascar, and Uruguay. It came to us through a community partnership, one of the sourcing models we publish and stand behind.
