These are AA-grade Carnelian tumbled stones from Boeny, Madagascar, sold by the piece or by the pound. Carnelian is a chalcedony colored burnt orange to red by iron oxide, and heat treatment is common across the trade. Each piece runs 0.75-1.25 inches at Mohs 6.5-7, sourced through a community partnership. A favorite creativity stone for desks.
Carnelian runs from pale peach to deep rust red. The color comes from iron, and the best pieces have a warmth that feels almost lit from within. It's a variety of chalcedony, related to agate, and it polishes up with a glassy shine.
We bring these tumbled stones in from Boeny, Madagascar. Worth knowing: a lot of the carnelian on the market is heat-treated. What we carry is natural and untreated.
