These are A-grade Banded Carnelian polished crystal chips from Francistown, Botswana, sold by the piece or by the pound. Carnelian is iron-tinted chalcedony, and here the orange-to-red color shows in natural bands. Each chip runs 0.25-0.50 inch at Mohs 6.5-7, sourced through a community partnership. A favorite creativity stone for crystal grids.
Carnelian runs from pale peach to deep rust red. The color comes from iron, and the best pieces have a warmth that feels almost lit from within. It's a variety of chalcedony, related to agate, and it polishes up with a glassy shine. It has been one of the most popular gemstones throughout human history, used in everything from Egyptian funerary jewelry to Roman signet rings.
These chips come from Francistown, Botswana. Worth knowing: a lot of the carnelian on the market is heat-treated. What we carry is natural and untreated.

Carnelian sits at 6.5-7 on the Mohs scale, about as hard as glass, so it handles daily use but will scratch against harder stones. Keep chemical cleaners away from it; they can etch the surface.
