About This Howlite

Howlite reads like white marble shot through with gray veins that almost look like ink drawn across the surface. It's chalky, cool to the touch, and soft enough that you want to handle it with a little care.

These tumbled stones come from Masvingo, Zimbabwe. It's soft (Mohs 3.5), so handle it with a little care, give it only a quick rinse and dry it, and store it in its own pouch so harder stones don't scratch it.

Howlite was named for Henry How, the Nova Scotia mineralogist who first described it in 1868.

Traditionally Used For

In crystal traditions, howlite is often associated with quiet, steady calm, winding down and settling into rest, and a simple anchor during practice. It's traditionally linked to the crown chakra. If that resonates, place it at the top of an altar or on a nightstand. Work with it the way that fits your own practice.

Is this real howlite, and is it heated, dyed or treated?

Natural howlite from Masvingo, Zimbabwe. Untreated and undyed. Howlite is often dyed blue and sold as turquoise; ours is natural white and gray.

Each piece measures 1.25 to 2 inches on its longest side and weighs 20 to 40 grams. About 16 to 24 pieces per pound at this size, and each option shows its piece count.

What does AA grade mean?

Grades reflect visual quality within a batch. A is standard, with typical inclusions. AA shows stronger color, cleaner surfaces and tighter sizing. AAA is the top 10 to 15 percent of a batch. Every lot is inspected and graded by our team in Rockville, Maryland, not taken on the supplier’s word.
