About This Howlite

Howlite reads like white marble shot through with gray veins that almost look like ink drawn across the surface. It's chalky, cool to the touch, and soft enough that you want to handle it with a little care.

Howlite was named for Henry How, the Nova Scotia mineralogist who first described it in 1868.

Hand-selected from Masvingo, Zimbabwe. It's soft (Mohs 3.5), so handle it with a little care, keep it dry, and store it in its own pouch so harder stones don't scratch it.

Traditionally Used For

Howlite has long been used in practices around quiet, steady calm, winding down and settling into rest, and a simple anchor during practice. It's traditionally linked to the crown chakra. If that resonates, keep one in a quiet corner where you practice or reflect. There's no single right way to carry it.

Is this real howlite, and is it heated, dyed or treated?

Natural howlite from Masvingo, Zimbabwe. Not treated and not dyed. Howlite is often dyed blue and sold as turquoise; ours is left in its natural white and gray state.

Will I get the exact pieces in the photos?

You'll receive pieces from the same batch photographed, weighed to the amount you choose. Every piece passes our quality control and meets or exceeds what you see in the photos. Single specimens are listed separately and say so.

What size are the pieces, and how many are in a pound?

Each piece measures 0.5 to 1 inches on its longest side and weighs 2 to 10 grams. About 64 to 128 pieces per pound at this size, and each option shows its piece count.

What does AA grade mean?

Grade AA. Clean white base, consistent veining, no major chips or flat spots. Grades reflect visual quality within a batch. A is standard, with typical inclusions. AA shows stronger color, cleaner surfaces and tighter sizing. AAA is the top 10 to 15 percent of a batch. Every lot is inspected and graded by our team in Rockville, Maryland, not taken on the supplier’s word.

Where does it come from, and how do you know?

Masvingo Province, Zimbabwe. Howlite is also mined in Canada and the United States, but our current lot is Zimbabwean. It came to us through an artisan network, one of the sourcing models we publish and stand behind.
