These are A-grade Tiger Eye raw stones from the Northern Cape, South Africa, in a smaller 0.75 to 1.50 inch size, sold by the piece or by the pound at 24 to 48 pieces per pound. Tiger eye is quartz that replaced fibrous crocidolite, leaving the silky golden shimmer called chatoyancy. Mohs 6.5-7, hand-finished with jojoba oil, bought directly at the source. The size most people reach for when building grids or wrapping stones.
Tiger eye is gold and brown quartz with a silky shimmer called chatoyancy, caused by parallel fibers that catch light and seem to move as you tilt the stone. On small raw pieces like these the shimmer shows as bright patches on broken faces rather than sweeping across a polished curve.
We bring these raw pieces in from Northern Cape, South Africa. Worth knowing: a lot of the tiger eye on the market is heat-treated to redden it. Ours is not. It is finished with natural jojoba oil, which deepens the gold already there.

Tiger Eye sits at 6.5-7 on the Mohs scale, about as hard as glass, so it handles daily use but will scratch against harder stones. Keep chemical cleaners away from it; they can etch the surface.
