This is an AA-grade Cactus Spirit Quartz specimen from Mpumalanga, South Africa. Spirit quartz grows as a host crystal encrusted with hundreds of tiny secondary points, a habit almost exclusive to South Africa. It measures 2.89 x 1.86 x 1.27 inches, 0.23 pounds, Mohs 7. It sits low and spreading, wider across than it is tall. Natural color, jojoba-finished, no dye, heat, or irradiation.
Spirit quartz is not a mineral species, it is a growth habit. A quartz point acts as a host and hundreds of much smaller crystals nucleate across its faces, encrusting it in a druzy coat. The effect is sometimes called cactus quartz or porcupine quartz for the obvious reason.
It is known almost exclusively from South Africa, where it was first documented commercially in the 1990s. This piece comes from Mpumalanga. Color depends on what was in the host: clear where the quartz is plain, pale lavender where amethyst coloring reached the secondary points.
Because every host crystal is a different shape, no two spirit quartz pieces coat the same way. This one sits low and spreading.
