These are AA-grade Pyrite hand polished stones from Ancash, Peru, sold by the piece or by the pound. Pyrite is iron sulfide with a true metallic gold luster, noticeably heavy for its size. Pyrite is iron sulfide (FeS2), an isometric mineral with a Mohs hardness of 6 to 6.5. Its name comes from the Greek pyr ("fire") because struck pieces can spark.
It's earned the nickname "fool's gold" for its bright metallic luster, but real pyrite has a distinct cubic crystal habit and is significantly denser and harder than the soft yellow metal it imitates.
