This is an A-grade Red Jasper crystal mushroom, carved in Zimbabwe from Northern Cape red jasper. Red jasper is an opaque chalcedony colored by dispersed iron oxide, and the darker seams are the parent rock's iron banding exposed by the carve. It stands 4.69 inches tall, 3.32 across, 1.70 pounds, Mohs 6.5 to 7, natural and untreated. From an existing collection, not new extraction.
Red jasper is an opaque variety of chalcedony, the same microcrystalline quartz family as agate, colored throughout by finely dispersed iron oxide rather than by any surface treatment. The red runs the whole way through the stone.
What separates one piece from another is the pattern. Darker seams and mottling mark where iron concentrated in the parent rock, and a carved form cuts across them so the interior structure becomes the surface design.
The material comes from the Northern Cape of South Africa, whose banded iron formations are among the richest iron-bearing rocks on earth. This mushroom was carved in Zimbabwe through an artisan network and reached us via an existing collection rather than new extraction.
