These are A-grade Tiger Eye tumbled stones from Northern Cape, South Africa, sold by the piece or by the pound. Tiger Eye is quartz that replaced fibrous crocidolite, and those parallel fibers create its silky golden chatoyancy. Each piece runs 0.75-1.25 inches at Mohs 6.5-7, bought directly at the source. A favorite confidence stone for pockets.
Tiger Eye belongs to the Quartz family as a pseudomorph after crocidolite, with a Mohs hardness of 6.5 to 7. Its name comes from the chatoyant cat's-eye effect created by parallel fibers reflecting light.
It has been used as an ornamental stone for centuries, with South African material setting the global standard. Tiger Eye forms through pseudomorphism, where quartz gradually replaces fibrous crocidolite while preserving the original parallel fiber structure.
On the market, you'll see dyed blue and red versions and reconstituted material. Natural Tiger Eye shows silky chatoyancy and warm color shift without artificial uniformity.
