About This Lepidolite

Lepidolite has a lavender-gray shimmer that comes from its layered mica structure. Hold one up to the light and you'll see it flash, almost like cracked ice. It's one of the softer stones we carry, which means you treat it gently. The name comes from Greek 'lepidos' meaning scale, referring to its scaly, micaceous texture.

Sourced directly from Arequipa, Peru. At 2.5-3 on the Mohs scale, it's on the softer end. Keep it away from water and store it separately from harder pieces. Worth knowing: a lot of the lepidolite on the market is stabilized. What we carry is natural and untreated.

Traditionally Used For

Lepidolite has long been used in practices around quiet, steady calm, working through difficult feelings at your own pace, and winding down and settling into rest. It's traditionally linked to the heart and third eye chakras. If that resonates, hold one over your chest for a few breaths when you need to soften. There's no single right way to carry it.

These are traditional associations drawn from historical practice. This stone is not a substitute for medical or mental health care.

Care and Use

Sensitivity Very High

Lepidolite sits at 2.5-3 on the Mohs scale, among the softest stones we carry, so handle it gently and keep it dry. Long soaks dull the surface, so keep any water contact brief and dry it fully.

Questions Before You Buy

Is this real lepidolite, and is it heated, dyed or treated?

Natural lepidolite from Arequipa, Peru. Our Lepidolite is personally selected and we disclose treatment status per batch. If you have questions about your specific lot, reach out to us directly.

Will I get the exact pieces in the photos?

You'll receive pieces from the same batch photographed, weighed to the amount you choose. Every piece passes our quality control and meets or exceeds what you see in the photos. Single specimens are listed separately and say so.

What size are the pieces, and how many are in a pound?

Each piece measures 1 to 1.5 inches on its longest side and weighs 20 to 60 grams. About 12 to 20 pieces per pound at this size, and each option shows its piece count.

What does AA grade mean?

AA Grade indicates above-average color saturation, good mica sheen visibility, and quality hand polish. Minor natural layering variations are expected given the mica structure of the mineral. Grades reflect visual quality within a batch. A is standard, with typical inclusions. AA shows stronger color, cleaner surfaces and tighter sizing. AAA is the top 10 to 15 percent of a batch. Every lot is inspected and graded by our team in Rockville, Maryland, not taken on the supplier’s word.

Where does it come from, and how do you know?

These stones are sourced from Peru, which produces well-colored lepidolite with the visible mica sheet structure that makes the stone distinctive. Each batch is personally selected for color and polish quality. It came to us through a direct source, one of the sourcing models we publish and stand behind.
