These are AA-grade Malachite hand polished stones from Haut-Katanga, Democratic Republic of the Congo. Malachite is a copper carbonate hydroxide with concentric green banding formed by botryoidal growth in oxidized copper deposits. Each piece runs 1.25-2 inches at Mohs 3.5-4, sourced through a community partnership. A favorite protection stone for display shelves.
Malachite is green in concentric rings and bands, sometimes bullseye patterns, sometimes sweeping stripes. The color is the color of oxidized copper because that's exactly what it is. It polishes to a mirror shine.
Sourced directly from Haut-Katanga, Democratic Republic of the Congo. At 3.5-4 on the Mohs scale, it's on the softer end. Keep it away from water and store it separately from harder pieces. Worth knowing: a lot of the malachite on the market is stabilized and sold as imitation. What we carry is natural and untreated.
Used extensively in ancient Egypt for eye cosmetics.

Malachite sits at 3.5-4 on the Mohs scale, soft enough to scratch with a knife, so keep it dry and store it on its own. Long soaks dull the surface, so keep any water contact brief and dry it fully.
Natural malachite from Haut-Katanga, Democratic Republic of the Congo. Most polished malachite on the market is sold natural, though some lower-grade material is reconstituted from chips or stabilized with resin. Ours is solid natural malachite. We disclose any treatment when confirmed.

Each piece measures 1.25 to 2 inches on its longest side and weighs 50 to 100 grams. About 8 to 12 pieces per pound at this size, and each option shows its piece count.
Grade AA. Strong green banding, hand polished smooth, natural variation in pattern between pieces. Grades reflect visual quality within a batch. A is standard, with typical inclusions. AA shows stronger color, cleaner surfaces and tighter sizing. AAA is the top 10 to 15 percent of a batch. Every lot is inspected and graded by our team in Rockville, Maryland, not taken on the supplier’s word.
