What it is

Anatase carries the formula TiO2. It belongs to the tetragonal system. On paper it is oxides (TiO2 polymorph).

It sits at 5.5 to 6 on the Mohs scale. The surface reads adamantine to metallic-adamantine. Light behaviour is transparent to nearly opaque. Specific gravity runs 3.79 to 3.97. The streak is white to pale yellow. It breaks with perfect cleavage; subconchoidal fracture.

Sharply pointed, steep tetragonal dipyramids, like little obelisks, in blue-black or honey tones with near-diamond brilliance, usually sitting on alpine quartz.

Expect to see it as steep double pyramids, tiny brilliant crystals on quartz or matrix specimens.

How to live with it

Care & handling.

At 5.5 to 6 on the Mohs scale it handles careful wear but scratches against quartz and dust. Store it separately and take rings off before rough work.

It breaks with perfect cleavage; subconchoidal fracture, which is worth knowing before you set it or drop it.

Warm water and a soft cloth clean almost everything. Ultrasonic tanks, steamers and household cleaners are where pieces get ruined.
