Cassiterite carries the formula SnO₂. It belongs to the tetragonal system. On paper it is oxide (tin).
It sits at 6 to 7 on the Mohs scale. The surface reads adamantine to submetallic. Light behaviour is transparent to opaque. Specific gravity runs 6.8 to 7.1. The streak is white to brownish. It breaks with indistinct cleavage; subconchoidal fracture.

Expect to see it as stubby twinned crystals with elbow bends, waterworn pebbles or massive ore.

At 6 to 7 on the Mohs scale it handles careful wear but scratches against quartz and dust. Store it separately and take rings off before rough work.
It breaks with indistinct cleavage; subconchoidal fracture, which is worth knowing before you set it or drop it.
Clean it by hand, dry it properly, and keep it away from ultrasonic cleaners and hot steam.
