Cuprite carries the formula Cu₂O. It belongs to the isometric system. On paper it is oxide (copper).
It sits at 3.5 to 4 on the Mohs scale. The surface reads adamantine to submetallic. Light behaviour is translucent deep red to opaque. Specific gravity runs 5.8 to 6.2. The streak is brownish red, shining. It breaks with indistinct cleavage; conchoidal fracture.
