What it is

The geology.

Stabilized Turquoise carries the formula CuAl6(PO4)4(OH)8·4H2O + epoxy resin. It belongs to the triclinic (cryptocrystalline) system. On paper it is treated natural gem (resin-impregnated turquoise).

It sits at 5 to 6 (hardened by resin) on the Mohs scale. The surface reads waxy to subvitreous. Light behaviour is opaque. Specific gravity runs 2.4 to 2.9. The streak is white to pale greenish. It breaks with conchoidal fracture.

How to live with it

Care & handling.

At 5 to 6 (hardened by resin) on the Mohs scale it handles careful wear but scratches against quartz and dust. Store it separately and take rings off before rough work.

It breaks with conchoidal fracture, which is worth knowing before you set it or drop it.

Warm water and a soft cloth clean almost everything. Ultrasonic tanks, steamers and household cleaners are where pieces get ruined.
