Selenite is a form of gypsum, a soft calcium sulfate mineral that a fingernail can scratch. In the crystal trade the name also covers satin spar, the silky fibrous gypsum cut into towers, wands and bowls, while clear selenite blades are sold raw.

Before You Buy Selenite

Selenite or satin spar?

Both are real gypsum. Selenite is the clear crystal form; satin spar is the silky, fibrous form often cut into towers and wands, with a sheen that moves as you turn it. The trade calls both selenite.

Natural or dyed?

Selenite is usually clear to white, and gypsum also comes naturally in shades like orange and brown. Porous gypsum takes dye easily, so some colored pieces are dyed. We disclose all treatments on the product page.

Can it get wet?

A quick splash won't ruin it, but gypsum slowly dissolves in water, so never soak it, use salt water, or leave it damp. Dust it with a dry, soft cloth instead.

Care

At 2 on the Mohs scale it's soft enough to scratch with a fingernail, and thin pieces break if bent too far. Store it apart from harder stones and set it down gently.
