Hanksite carries the formula Na22K(SO4)9(CO3)2Cl. It belongs to the hexagonal system. On paper it is sulfates (sulfate-carbonate).

It sits at 3 to 3.5 on the Mohs scale. The surface reads vitreous to dull. Light behaviour is transparent to translucent. Specific gravity runs 2.56. The streak is white. It breaks with poor cleavage; conchoidal fracture.
